It is not understandable that laparoscopic hernia surgery with mesh is commended by the medical professionals for being superior to open and mesh surgery, but the recurrence rate of laparoscopy surgery is double that of open surgery, for example, 2% vs 1%.. Why?

If the skills and experience of the surgeons are crucial, how can concerned patients get such information of the individual surgeons to alleviate some of their anxiety?

Laparoscopic hernia repair is superior in the sense of less postoperative pain and earlier return to normal activities. Case selection is very important to reduce rate of recurrence. very large hernia is not recommended for laparoscopic repair. Secondly, experience of surgeon is also very important in clinical judgement and technical skills.
Patient can ask the surgeon directly on his/her experience and outcome.
